Argentina Shuts Down Probe Into President Milei’s Alleged Libra Token Scandal
Argentine authorities have abruptly terminated a special investigative unit probing potential connections between President Javier Milei and the Libra cryptocurrency scandal. The task force, established three months ago amid public outcry, was dissolved through a presidential decree signed by both Milei and Justice Minister Mariano Cuneo Libarona.
The investigation centered on Milei’s promotional activities for the Libra token shortly before its developers executed a rug pull—abruptly withdrawing project funds and collapsing the token’s value. Prosecutors had expanded their inquiry to include the president’s inner circle, notably his sister Karina Milei.
Government officials maintain the dissolution reflects completed investigative work rather than political interference. The move comes as Argentina grapples with balancing cryptocurrency innovation against investor protection, particularly following high-profile crypto failures.
